Best of all, it’s made in just 20 minutes, making it a great addition to your dinner rotation or meal prep routine. Method

To make this Saucy Beef and Broccoli, start by preparing the beef and broccoli. Cut the flank steak into bite-sized pieces, making sure to cut against the grain for tenderness. Then, chop the broccoli into small florets. Set them aside while you prepare the sauce and cook the meat. Next, make the sauce. In a small bowl, whisk together the beef or chicken broth, hoisin sauce, soy sauce (or coconut aminos), rice vinegar, avocado oil, arrowroot flour (or cornstarch), ground ginger, and black pepper. Once all the ingredients are well combined, set the sauce aside for later. Now, heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the steak to the pan. Cook the beef for about 4 minutes until it’s nearly cooked through, leaving a little pink inside for tenderness. Remove the beef from the skillet and set it aside. In the same pan, add the remaining tablespoon of oil, then toss in the chopped broccoli, mashed garlic, and sliced green onions. Add the water and stir to coat everything. Cook for about 2-3 minutes, until the broccoli starts to soften but still retains some crunch. Now, add the beef back into the pan with the broccoli. Pour the prepared sauce over the beef and broccoli, stirring well to coat everything evenly. Let the beef and broccoli cook in the sauce for about 5-6 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken and everything to meld together. Once done, turn off the heat and taste the dish, adjusting the seasonings if necessary. Serve the Saucy Beef and Broccoli over a bed of rice and garnish with sesame seeds, if desired. Enjoy this quick, flavorful, and hearty meal!

Ingredients

  • For the Beef and Broccoli:

  • 2 tbsp avocado oil or olive oil

  • 1 pound flank steak, cut into bite-sized pieces

  • 4 cups broccoli florets, cut into bite-sized pieces

  • 4 cloves garlic, mashed

  • 2 green onions, sliced thin, whites and green parts

  • 1/4 cup water

  • For the Sauce:

  • 3/4 cup beef or chicken broth (or water)

  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce (I used gluten-free)

  • 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce or coconut aminos

  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar

  • 2 tsp avocado oil

  • 2 tbsp arrowroot/tapioca flour/corn starch

  • 2 tsp ground ginger

  • 1 tsp ground black pepper

Directions

  • Prepare the Beef and Broccoli
Start by cutting the flank steak into bite-sized pieces. For a tender result, make sure to cut the steak against the grain. Then, cut the broccoli into bite-sized florets and set everything aside.
  • Make the Sauce
In a small bowl, whisk together all the sauce ingredients—broth, hoisin sauce, soy sauce (or coconut aminos), rice vinegar, avocado oil, arrowroot flour (or cornstarch), ground ginger, and black pepper. Set the sauce aside while you cook the beef and broccoli.
  • Cook the Steak
Add 1 tablespoon of oil to a large pan over medium heat. Once the pan is hot, add the steak and cook until it’s nearly done (a little pink in the middle is fine). This should take about 4 minutes. Once cooked, remove the steak from the skillet and set it aside.
  • Cook the Broccoli and Vegetables
In the same pan, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil. Then, add the broccoli, garlic, and green onions to the pan. Pour in the water and stir everything together. Cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the broccoli starts to soften but still retains a bit of crunch.
  • Combine and Finish Cooking
Add the cooked steak back into the pan with the broccoli. Pour the sauce over everything, stirring to coat the beef and broccoli. Let the dish cook in the sauce for about 5-6 minutes until the sauce thickens and everything is well coated. Taste and adjust the seasonings if needed.
  • Serve and Enjoy
Once everything is cooked and coated in that delicious, saucy goodness, serve the beef and broccoli over rice. Garnish with sesame seeds if you’d like. Enjoy your quick, healthy, and tasty meal!

Notes

  • Cooking the steak: Be careful not to overcook the steak. It cooks quickly, so remove it from the pan as soon as it’s browned and still juicy.
  • Thickening the sauce: If you’re using arrowroot or cornstarch to thicken the sauce, make sure to whisk the mixture well so there are no lumps. Stir constantly when adding it to the pan to prevent clumping.
